Some of my friends have always been asking what's the difference between learning salsa from instructors at the dance school, as well as those who have instructors come down to the Universities / Polytechnics to teach? Some have more private sessions either one-on-one or with an instructor to learn.

There are also some "freelance" (as in not associated with any dance school) dancers out there who provide salsa dance clinics to friends and colleagues. Share with us what are the sort of differences.

Lionel from LADC teaches in SMU. The follows are my personal observation. I guess the difference is that almost all uni students join the salsa classes to "try" dancing or for its trendy image portrayed on the mass media. They don't social as much as students from dance school out of unis and usually don't continue after a couple of series.

im not so sure but have a friend who mentioned that dancers from unis and dance schools are very diff ...

This friend of mine has been doing salsa in dance schools before taking up salsa as CCA in unis. according to him, dancers from unis are usually taught to do choreo dance rather than following the lead.

Different emphasis bah. In uni the students need to manage studies as well. Salsa is just a CCA to many and since the main aim of the salsa club is to perform, the focus is to perform rather than social.

The sad reality of local uni. They should make salsa an elective instead.

Haha... well SMU has dance elective. Dance: East and west. I took it last semester and well, it's refreshing. How much can a student learn in just one sem right. So it's only indian, malay, chinese, and modern. No salsa. No latin dances. No ballroom. No ballet. No jazz. No a lot of things!
